Record Reviews
(All reviews by your host Walter Stettner)
What a record! Lloyd is back and his playing
sounds as good and fresh as it did in the 70’s and 80’s when he recorded all
his classic solo albums. This is a top notch production that should be in the
collection of every lover of the Steel Guitar.
The album was produced by Russ Pahl, one of the
top studio players in Nashville (Lloyd refers to him as the “Charlie McCoy of
the new millenium”!). Lloyd uses his old Sho-Bud LDG and his trusty old Fender
Amp with the JBL speakers and sounds fantastic. The songs include some of
Lloyd’s favorites like “Farewell Party” (which he never recorded as
instrumental so far!) and “Borrowed Angel”, the old Johnny Paycheck song
“Jukebox Charlie” from Johnny’s Little Darlin’ days, a beautiful version
of the old Everly Brothers-Hit “So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad” (with
guest vocal by Junior Brown), a moving “Ashokan Farewell” and the old Beach
Boys song “God Only Knows”. Musicians include Russ Pahl, Billy Sanford and
Junior Brown on Guitars, Larry Franklin on Fiddle, Dave Pomeroy and Glenn Worf
on Bass, Mark Beckett and John Gardner on Drums. The song “100 Years From Now”
features Gilian Welch and David Rawlings on Vocals.
Great album with great music!

This is Dickie’s first solo album and it is
awesome! Lots of traditional Country Music and classic Steel sounds by one of
the true masters of Texas Honky Music. Dickie has been active since the 1960’s
playing in the studio and on the road for stars like Darrell McCall and Connie
Smith.
The album was recorded at JT Soundlab, that is
Justin Trevino’s studio in Martindale, TX. Justin Trevino engineered and mixed,
he also can be heard on Bass, Rhythm and Lead Guitar and vocal (“Till All
These Dreams Come True”), other musicians include John Reynolds on Drums,
Debra Hurd on Piano, Bobby Flores and Ernie Reed on Fiddles, Johnny Bush appears
as guest vocalist on Harlan Howard’s beautiful ballad “The Deepening Snow”.
The song selection ranges from slow ballads to
4/4 shuffles and swing, songs include “Another Bridge To Burn”, “Yesterday”,
the old Bryant standard “We Could”, Roger Miller’s “Half A Mind”,
Willie Nelson’s “Darling Are You Ever Coming Home”, Johnny Bush’s
“Sound Of A Heartache”, the old gospel standard “When They Ring Those
Golden Bells” and the bouncy “I’ll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)”.
This is definitely a top class production that
will become a classic record among all lovers of the Steel Guitar!

(2009 Long Lil Doggie Music)
Who says Country Music is dead? This brand new album by lovely Ms. Joannie Keller proves otherwise. Joanie is the wife of Mike Johnson who is one of the regular steel players in the Nashville studios these days. The ten selections on this album feature Mike's steel playing and Joanie's wonderful voice on standards like "Pick Me Up On Your Way Down", "Hello Trouble" and "Making Believe".
This is Country Music at its best!
