In 1968, he was signed by Chart Records and recorded several albums for the label, mostly a mix of country material and pop flavored songs. Especially the latter catefory brought him fame, his version of "Proud Mary" won him a gold record, the same happened with his biggest hit "Take A Letter, Maria".
